A go direct case study

Hey besties,

Happy Galentine’s Day. šŸ’— Here's what hit the group chat this week šŸ‘‡

šŸ“£ Go direct case study: "No one cares that you redesigned your app" -every comms person ever.

Except… people do care. The ones who live, breathe, and use your product every day. Which is why I love that Notion's CEO did a full go direct trifecta: he told a story instead of just announcing a product (including the behind-the-scenes code name), pre-empted the classic "I hate the new design" user feedback trope, and invited his customer community in for beta access. This turned a non-news moment into an organic attention moment.

Not bad for the head of the Notion’s "Storytelling Team." šŸ˜

šŸ“š IC book club: Internal comms bestie Regine Nelson created the IC Resource Hub with 100+ books, communities, podcasts, and tools. Check it out or add your own favorite. (Do any of the books have Fae? Asking for a friend.)

šŸ“¬ The pitch inbox of nightmares: The Stack's Edward Targett screenshotted his pitch-filled inbox and I truly don't know how journalists do it.

šŸ—“ļø I'm on the speaking circuit over the next two weeks, I'd love to see you!

  1. AI for internal comms with Workshop (Feb. 19)

  2. My Vibe Coding session (Feb. 26 & 27)

  3. AMA on everything AI for PR pros with Qwoted (Feb. 26)

Yes, two sessions on Feb. 26. Here's hoping the wellness gods keep my children healthy.

šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø Quick PSA: Not sure who needs to hear this, but please tell your CEOs to stop making jokes.

Except for this one: the love for my CEO dad's Super Bowl snack reinforces what I knew to be true: you all are my people.

Chat soon,

PS: Last week’s most-clicked was Jim Prosser’s Building Things Is Comms Now.

You're reading the Comms Bestie Group Chat, a free weekly drop to 5,000+ comms pros. Off the Record is the membership behind the group chat: 200+ comms leaders getting training, coaching, and community. It’s where the magic happens. ✨

Your comms AI chief of staff
Hello friends, Happy Masters Week to those who celebrate ā›³ļø. One thing you might not know about me: I married into a golf family. Both of my in-laws were professional golfers. There's so much hardware in their house that the guest bathroom mouthwash holder is a championship trophy. Normal. Unfortunately, my sports prowess begins and ends with loving to watch. I've never broken 100 on the course...
Big Bestie Energy
Hey besties, Here’s what had my group chats lighting up this week. šŸ¤–Ā PR for Your AI: I'veĀ longĀ been a proponent of "doing PR for your AI" program. Basically meaning, you need to be talking about how you're automating rote work and doing more strategic work with AI. Two things on this stuck out for me this week: One CEO literallyĀ saidĀ it: ā€œIf someone came to me and said ā€˜hey I...
Delayed accountability, swift action
Hey besties, A departure from our normal links-based newsletter this week. We’ll dive into how two comms teams responded to allegations of harm against children. One acted immediately. The other waited until they had no choice. ✊ First: United Farm Workers and Cesar Chavez The New York Times published a harrowing, explosive account of rape and abuse allegations of minors against Cesar Chavez, t...
